How to Fix Scratched Interior Plastic Panels: DIY Restoration

Interior plastic panels accumulate scratches from keys, belt buckles, rings, pets, and everyday use. Deep scratches on the dashboard, door panels, and center console make your car look worn and reduce resale value. Unlike exterior paint scratches, interior plastic scratches require different techniques because the plastic is unpainted and has a molded texture.

Types of Interior Plastic Scratches

Light scratches (fingernail does not catch) are surface-level and can be polished out. Medium scratches (fingernail catches slightly) need filling or heat treatment. Deep scratches and gouges require sanding, filling, and texture reapplication. Identifying the depth determines the repair approach.

Fix 1: Heat Gun Method (Light to Medium Scratches)

This is the most effective DIY method for light scratches on textured plastic. Use a heat gun on low setting (not a hair dryer — it does not get hot enough). Hold the heat gun 3-4 inches from the scratched area and move it in slow, circular motions. The heat slightly melts the plastic surface, causing the scratch to "heal" as the texture reforms.
