How to Fix Scratched Interior Plastic Panels: DIY Restoration
Interior plastic panels accumulate scratches from keys, belt buckles, rings, pets, and everyday use. Deep scratches on the dashboard, door panels, and center console make your car look worn and reduce resale value. Unlike exterior paint scratches, interior plastic scratches require different techniques because the plastic is unpainted and has a molded texture.
Types of Interior Plastic Scratches
Light scratches (fingernail does not catch) are surface-level and can be polished out. Medium scratches (fingernail catches slightly) need filling or heat treatment. Deep scratches and gouges require sanding, filling, and texture reapplication. Identifying the depth determines the repair approach.
Fix 1: Heat Gun Method (Light to Medium Scratches)
This is the most effective DIY method for light scratches on textured plastic. Use a heat gun on low setting (not a hair dryer — it does not get hot enough). Hold the heat gun 3-4 inches from the scratched area and move it in slow, circular motions. The heat slightly melts the plastic surface, causing the scratch to "heal" as the texture reforms. This takes practice — too much heat will warp the panel, too little does nothing. Test on a hidden area first.
Important: Keep the heat gun moving constantly. Never hold it in one spot for more than 2 seconds. The plastic should become slightly glossy, then return to its original texture as it cools.
Fix 2: Plastic Polish (Very Light Scratches)
For very light surface marks, a plastic polish like Meguiar's PlastX or Novus Plastic Polish can buff them out. Apply a small amount to a microfiber cloth and rub in circular motions with moderate pressure for 2-3 minutes. Wipe clean. This works best on smooth (untextured) plastic surfaces like piano black trim.
Fix 3: Sanding and Texture Spray (Deep Scratches)
For deep scratches, start with 400-grit sandpaper to smooth the scratch edges. Progress to 800-grit, then 1200-grit for a smooth finish. Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol. Apply a texture-matching spray paint — SEM Texture Coat is the professional product that replicates the grain pattern of automotive interior plastic. Apply in light, even coats from 10 inches away. Let each coat dry 10 minutes before the next. Three to four coats typically restore the texture.
Fix 4: Filler for Gouges
For gouges where material is missing, use a flexible plastic filler like Bondo Plastic Repair. Clean the gouge, apply the two-part filler, let it cure (15 minutes), then sand smooth starting with 220-grit and finishing with 600-grit. Apply texture spray to match the surrounding panel.
Prevention
Apply a UV protectant like 303 Aerospace to interior plastic every month — it keeps the plastic supple and less prone to scratching. Use seat belt guides to prevent buckle scratches on B-pillar trim. Keep keys and metal objects away from the center console and door pockets.
