How to Clean Car Air Vents and Remove Musty AC Smell

By Rachel Kim

If your car AC smells musty, the problem is mold and bacteria growing on the evaporator coil behind the dashboard. Here is how to fix it.

Step 1: Clean the Air Vents

Use a foam paint brush (2-inch, $2) to reach between vent slats. Follow with a vacuum using the brush attachment. For stubborn grime, wrap a microfiber cloth around a flat tool and slide between slats. Clean all vents including floor vents and rear vents.

Step 2: Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Most cars have one behind the glove box. Replace every 15,000-20,000 miles. Filters cost $10-25. Consider upgrading to an activated charcoal cabin filter (Bosch HEPA or Fram Fresh Breeze) for odor absorption.

Step 3: Clean the Evaporator Coil

Spray evaporator cleaner foam (Kool-It or Lubrizol) into the AC drain tube under the car, or through the cabin filter opening. Let sit 10 minutes, then run the AC on max to flush residue.

Step 4: Ozone Treatment (Persistent Smells)

Run an ozone generator in the car for 30 minutes with HVAC on recirculate. Air out for 30 minutes before driving. WARNING: Do not be inside during treatment.

Preventing Musty Smells

Run the fan without AC for 2 minutes before parking to dry the evaporator. Use fresh air mode regularly. Replace the cabin filter on schedule.
