First Dash Cam: 5 Key Specs You Must Understand

First Dash Cam: 5 Key Specs You Must Understand

By Rachel Kim ·

A dash cam is one of the smartest investments you can make for your car. But with hundreds of models on the market, knowing which specs actually matter can save you money and frustration.

1. Video Resolution

Resolution determines how clear your footage will be. 1080p Full HD is the minimum you should accept. 2K (1440p) or 4K models capture license plates and road signs far more clearly — critical if you ever need footage as evidence.

2. Field of View

A wider field of view (FOV) captures more of the road. Look for 140°–170°. Too narrow and you miss side incidents; too wide and the image distorts. 150° is a solid sweet spot for most drivers.

3. Night Vision / Low-Light Performance

Most accidents happen in low light. Look for cameras with large apertures (f/1.8 or wider) and Sony STARVIS or similar sensors. These perform dramatically better at night than budget sensors.

4. Loop Recording & Storage

Dash cams record continuously by overwriting old footage — this is called loop recording. Make sure it's included. Pair it with a 64GB or 128GB microSD card rated for continuous write cycles (Class 10 / U3).

5. Parking Mode

Parking mode activates the camera when your car is off, triggered by motion or impact. It requires either a hardwire kit or a built-in capacitor/battery. Essential if you park in busy areas.

Bonus: GPS Logging

GPS records your speed and location alongside video. Useful for insurance claims and proving you weren't at fault.

With these five specs in mind, you'll cut through the marketing noise and find a dash cam that actually protects you on the road.
